State trooper injured in Petersburg crash

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, Virginia State Police Trooper C. A. Turner was involved in a motor vehicle crash on Wagner Road at the intersection of North Normandy Road in Petersburg.

The crash occurred when Turner was traveling westbound on Wagner Road and a sedan traveling north on Normandy Road, failed to stop at the red light and failed to yield the right of way, according to police.

The sedan was attempting to make a left onto Wagner Road and crossed over into Turners lane of travel.  In order to avoid striking the sedan, Turner ran off the road to the right, lost control and crossed the median striking an embankment.  Due to the impact, the doors were jammed and Turner could not exit her vehicle, police said.

Turner, who was wearing her safety belt, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Southside Regional Medical Center where she was later released.

The traffic lights at the intersection were flashing at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.  The marked patrol vehicle is considered a total loss.  Turner observed a speeding violator and was in the process of stopping the violator when the sedan pulled out in front of her and crossed into her lane of travel.  Turner did not have her emergency lights activated at the time of the crash.
