RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Rescue crews recovered a person who reportedly jumped from the Manchester Bridge into the James River at about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The man, who has not identified, was recovered about a half-hour later by a fire-rescue team. According to police, he has died, but they have not said how he died or when.
A witness told Richmond Police that the man jumped off the bridge, landing in the James River below. Water levels are at about 5 feet today, and the river is shallow in the area under the bridge.
Richmond Police spokesman Gene Lepley said the man was taken to VCU Medical Center after jumping off the east side of the bridge and was rescued a couple hundred yards downstream.
