Free flu clinics coming to your neighborhood in Richmond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - It may be March 1, but more and more people are coming down with the flu. You can get a free flu shot at one of several places this month, as the Richmond City Health District may be coming to your neighborhood.

Many of you have already protected yourself from the flu by getting the flu shot, but we all know someone who hasn't. If you fall into the have not's, just take it from Linda Grisson who picked up her shot months ago.

"If you haven't gotten a flu shot yet, please come down. It's free! come down and get your flu shot. It's very important and you will make a difference," Grisson says.

Make a difference in the dozens of people you come in contact with everyday.

More people are coming down with the flu -- bucking the trend normally seen during this time of the year. So, that's why the Richmond City Health District is taking its clinic on the road this month.

The first clinic is set for today, at the Walmart in South Richmond at 2501 Sheila Lane.

"We want to be where the people are. A lot of times you plan to get a flu shot, but can't come down here. But, while you are going shopping, that reminds you and says 'hey, I need my flu shot," says George Jones with the Department of Health.

There is plenty of the vaccine to go around. In fact, we're told the supply in Richmond should not run out.

"This is the opportunity and it might be your last chance this year," adds Jones.

The health district received funding from the state to provide these outreach flu clinics. Leaders say they were not as aggressive doing it earlier this year. But now those efforts are ramping up.

It doesn't matter where you're from. As long as you roll up your sleeve, nurses are ready to protect you.

The clinic at Walmart will continue today from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. There will be another clinic on Thursday at the Greyhound Bus Station on the Boulevard during the same time.
