RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The L.C. Bird boys got a big early lead against Highland Springs and held on to win the Boys Central Region Final, while the Cosby girls had a furious comeback to topple Thomas Dale on the girls side Monday night at the Siegel Center.
The Dominion champion Skyhawks broke open to a 24-2 lead after the first quarter. The Springers were only able to score 36 points through the first three quarters, but managed a remarkable 34 in the final quarter and got the gap as close as one. But Bird held on at the end to win 73-70.
The Thomas Dale girls broke open a 23-7 early lead, but Cosby had a 16-0 fourth quarter run and beat the Knights 63-55. Future Duke Blue Devil Ta'lia Johnson scored 22 points, but fouled out with her team up five in the final quarter. The Knights could not recover, as the Titans pressured Dale into multiple turnovers. Dale did not have a field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Skyhawk boys and the Titan girls will host state quarterfinal matchups on Thursday at the Siegel Center, while the Springer boys and Knight girls will have to travel.
