RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Hundreds of people packed Cedar Street Baptist Church today to honor the life of a man everyone in attendance knew. Doctor Benjamin Robertson Senior was laid to rest today but his life will never be forgotten.
"My heart is breaking. My heart is always going to break, yes sir. Every time I think about him my heart is going to break," said Marilyn Maxey.
"He was an encouraging person. He led an invigorating and consequential life in so many ways," said Former Governor George Allen.
"Doctor Robertson was a towering presence in Church Hill," Del. Joe Morrissey said.
For more than 50 years Robertson was pastor of Cedar Street Baptist. In his time, he founded numerous organizations and touched a number of lives. Some couldn't imagine their lives without him.
"He was the rock that brought my whole family together, blessed all of my sisters and brothers. My mom raised eight wonderful kids and we believe in God heavily and we love Dr. Robertson," Maxey said.
Marilyn Maxey was baptized by Doctor Robertson when she was just three years old. She credits him for helping her family strengthen their faith.
"We didn't have the best of clothes but Dr. Robertson would get in there and go 'come to church anyway. You don't need this, you don't need that," she said.
In his time, Robertson accomplished a lot. He grew the church from 200 members to more than two thousand. And will always be remembered for his service to the community.
Doctor Robertson was 79-years-old when he died. He will be deeply missed and remembered always by friends and members of his church.
