Cap blows off U-Haul smokestack

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The wind caused an unusual problem. It blew the cap off the smokestack on the U-Haul building on Lombardy Friday.

Bricks started falling from the smokestack just after 2 o'clock.

Cars that belong to VUU employees were in the parking lot below.

Several of them had minor scratches and an engineer will have to take a closer look at the smokestack -- which hasn't been used in about 30 years.

"Their concern is the ring around the top that's obviously what has already disintegrated and fallen to the ground, but we've roped off the area - we're not letting anybody in there until we can get some engineers who know exactly what they're dealing with," said Captain William Martin with the Richmond fire Department.

In the meantime -- U-Haul is giving anyone who is stranded rental cars for the weekend.
