Train hits truck, killing one in New Kent

NEW KENT, VA (WWBT) - Around 11 a.m. this morning, the New Kent County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police responded to the scene of a fatal crash involving a 2001 Dodge pick-up and Amtrak train in Lanexa.

The incident occurred in the 15000 block of Rockahock Road in New Kent County.

The driver of the pick-up truck died at the scene. No one on the train was injured. The train, carrying approximately 125 passengers, was traveling from the Richmond area to Newport News. The name of the person has not been released.

The driver of the pick-up truck, was headed west on Rockahock Road and turned left onto a private drive before attempting to cross the tracks. According to witnesses, the conductor gave an audible sound as he approached the crossing. The pick-up driver failed to yield the right-of-way to the train.

The crash occurred on private property and the crossing is controlled by a railroad crossing sign. There are no armbars or signals. Under Virginia law, the vehicle operator is required to stop at least 15 feet prior to the crossing.

CSX crews are on scene inspecting the tracks and Amtrak representatives are also on scene inspecting the train. Passengers will be transported by bus to their final destination.

The New Kent County Sheriff's Office is assisting with the investigation.
