Bill to extend sex abuse suit limit clears hurdle

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Lawmakers in the General Assembly could vote as early as today to give sex abuse victims more time to file suit against their attackers.

The bill cleared a major hurdle last night when the House Courts Committee voted to extend the time to file lawsuits, from two years to 20 years.

The vote marked a major victory for victims and child advocates who faced off against the Catholic church, a powerful lobbying force that has tried to keep the time limit low in the wake of a priest sex scandal that's led to numerous lawsuits nationwide.
