CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Investigators are working to determine what caused an early morning apartment fire.
Firefighters arrived around 5:00 a.m. to see heavy smoke and flames coming from the front door of an apartment.
The blaze damaged three units and took about 40 minutes to get under control.
Even though nine people were displaced, Chesterfield Fire spokesperson Jason Elmore says it could have been a lot worse.
"Fortunately these apartments here are built with a firewall," he said. "So every two or three apartments there's a wall that goes from the ground all the way through the roof. In this situation it helped it from spreading to additional apartments."
A firefighter received minor injuries and was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
One fire victim was treated for smoke inhalation.
The Red Cross is assisting those affected.
