12 On Your Side helps remove potentially dangerous tree

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A Henrico man saw danger overhead, and when nobody appeared to be solving the problem he called 12 On Your Side for help.

Ever look up at the power lines, and wonder how strong they are? Robert Davenport does, ever since Thanksgiving...when he first saw what appeared to be a tree leaning against one.

The tree is thick and heavy, supported only by the tension a few dozen feet above the ground.

"I don't know how long the power line can hold the weight up of the tree, it's just a matter of time, I think, before it falls down," Davenport said in January.

Robert thinks about that every day, driving along Hungary Road, so he decided to do something about it. He called Dominion, twice, and Henrico County, but after several weeks, the tree was still over the roadway.

Robert was getting fed up.

"I'm at a loss, I don't know who else to call or what else to do," he said.

Robert then dialed NBC12. Determined to get action, we called Dominion, which referred us to Verizon, which referred us to Henrico County, which referred us back to Verizon.

It turned out not to be a power line, but rather a phone line, and partly because of our request, Verizon agreed to send a crew to cut it down. We went back a week later, and saw the pile of wood safely off to the side of the road.

"Just glad, that they did the right thing so no one got hurt," Davenport said in February.

Robert is pleased that the danger appears to be over, but wonders why it took so long to get results?

"Really, nothing got done until I called 12 On Your Side, so I really thank you guys for stepping up and helping out," he said.

We're told there are trees like this all over the region. Those that pose an immediate threat are cut down quickly. Others are handled on a case-by-case basis by whoever owns the tree, or the line.
