RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A family that donated $75,000 worth of artifacts to the proposed, National Slavery Museum in Fredericksburg wants former Governor Doug Wilder to give their stuff back!
The Slavery Museum has been Wilder's pet-project. It was supposed to be built by 2007. There's a "freedom garden," on the property which has fallen into disrepair. The museum also owes almost $150,000 in back taxes. But tonight, Governor Wilder sent NBC12 an e-mail about the artifacts & the future of the museum.
It reads in part: "On behalf of the board of directors, of which I am the chairman, I want to say this as plainly and directly as I can: we intend to build the United States National Slavery Museum."
Wilder says the artifacts are being properly cared for - and will be displayed when the museum is constructed.
