GOOCHLAND, VA (WWBT) - The Goochland County Treasurer's Office is in limbo after the arrest of Brenda Grubbs earlier this month for embezzlement.
Grubbs resigned late Friday and now county leaders are trying to figure out how to find a replacement.
A judge could soon decide if a special election will be called to replace Grubbs. In the meantime, the Treasurer's staff is now back at work, and say they're just happy to be back in the office.
It's business as usual inside the Goochland County Treasurer's Office. The only difference now from last week, is the name "Brenda Grubbs" is no longer listed as the treasurer after her resignation.
The Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday night to figure out what to do next. Typically the assistant treasurer would step in during a case like this, but board members say the assistant treasurer isn't interested in taking over the office even on a temporary basis.
A special election could be called, but it's up to a judge to decide whether it's worth holding an election before the regularly scheduled election in November.
The board could decide as soon as Tuesday to ask a judge for a special election. For now, the treasurer's staff is trying to tread water while county leaders try to figure out who might take over for Grubbs.
Brenda Grubbs was in court Monday morning and a trial date has been set for mid-May.
If the judge decides to hold a special election, county leaders say the election could be held within thirty days.
