HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - People from all over the state will gather for the funeral of Justice Leroy Hassell Sr. The 55-year old died earlier this week.
He was Virginia's first black supreme court chief justice. Friday Hassell lay in state at the state capitol. Crowds came to pay their respects. It was the first time in 20 years, a public servant received the prominent tribute.
"He was phenomenal," said mourner Sandra Taylor. "Very bright, but I think everyone's aware of that. He was personable and would be warm, but also direct. He took the law very seriously."
Hassell will be laid to rest Saturday at noon. Services will be held at Faith Landmark Ministries. That's in the 8400 block of Chamberlayne Road in Henrico. The House and Senate Court Committees are working to fill Justice Hassell's seat.
