Three dead, three wounded in two attacks

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Three people are dead and three others injured in two separate attacks.

The attacks happened Thursday night in Manassas.

Police say the violence happened less than a mile apart and within an hour.

Manassas police believe one person is behind the two attacks and are questioning someone they call a person of interest.

Investigators say in the first attack, four members of a family were shot - including a 15-year-old girl.

While police were investigating these shootings, another attack occurred less than a quarter mile away.

Officers say one man was shot in the head and a woman wounded.

That 77-year-old woman was attacked with what they believe is a machete.

"I think it's a tragic event for our community," said Manassas Police Chief Doug Keen. "It's gonna affect us. Hopefully our juvenile victim is okay. The last thing this community needs is another juvenile victim or any victim. Hurts even more when it's a juvenile."

Police say they picked up the person of interest during a traffic stop.

They also say the man is either related or a friend of all the victims.

At this point, no one has been charged with the city's first three murders of the year.

Although they believe this violence was isolated, police have boosted patrols.
