RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A man found guilty of stealing and selling a Henrico church steeple is forced to spend one night in jail.
The steeple was donated to the Glen Allen Free Will Baptist Church.
The Times-Dispatch reports, a judge found Robert Hammonds guilty of taking parts of the 900-pound steeple and selling it for $400 in scrap.
Hammonds faced 20 years in jail - but in court Tuesday, the deacon of the church asked the judge to show some mercy.
Hammonds should be out of jail Wednesday morning and is expected to pay $12,000 to help replace the estimated $34,000 steeple.
