Morrissey's plastic bag tax fails at General Assembly

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - If you use plastic bags at the grocery, don't worry, you won't be paying extra anytime soon.

A plastic bag tax proposed by local Delegate Joe Morrissey has failed in the General Assembly.  The bill would have charged five cents for using paper or plastic bags.

Morrissey says the bill was aimed at changing consumer habits and helping the environment.  Similar bag taxes have been passed in places like California and Washington, D.C.

This is the second straight year Morrissey has proposed a bag tax and he says he plans on trying again next year.
