Strawberry, Wagner headline Squirrels Banquet

by Matt Lincoln

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Last summer for the Flying Squirrels was like one big party.  They had another big one Friday night to kick off the 2011 baseball season.

The Squirrels held their first Hot Stove Banquet at the Marriott Downtown Richmond.  MLB All-Star Darryl Strawberry was the star of the lineup of celebrities that attended the inaugural celebration.  Strawberry, the 1983 National League Rookie of the Year, joined seven-time All-Star Billy Wagner, legendary pitcher Tommy John, San Francisco Giants' reliever Javier Lopez, former Richmond Virginian Eddie Kasko, the entire 2011 Flying Squirrels' Field Staff and Minor League Baseball President Pat O'Conner as celebrities that were on hand for the banquet.

Fans had the opportunity to get autographs with the stars before the event, and then bid on auction items to benefit charity.
