Chesterfield residents protest board vote

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -  There was extra security at Wednesday night's Board of Supervisors meeting in Chesterfield.

Not everyone's happy about the election of a new chair.

Nearly 100 county residents came to the meeting to show support for board member Jim Holland who had expected to become the new chair.

Holland would've become the first black board chairman in Chesterfield history.

Instead, his fellow board members reversed course - and elevated long time board member Art Warren as their leader.

Those in support of Holland are looking for an explanation.

"It was painful for the community," said First Baptist Church Pastor Wilson Shannon. "Our representative was the one that made the opposing nomination. That was painful - no consideration for merit and content."

"We should be allowed to participate in the process, we should be able to lead," said Sharon Crenshaw. "The county has a diverse population, the leadership should reflect that."

The protestors asked for Warren to step down from his position as chair to give way to Holland.

The board did not address their request.
