HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – A Henrico man is facing statutory rape charges tonight for allegedly having sex with his girlfriend's teenage daughter. Police have charged Norman James Jr. with statutory rape for what police describe as an on-going sexual assault that went on for nearly 5 years. Police are still investigating these alleged incidents but the victim says they've been happening since she was just 10-years-old.

41-year-old James is now facing charges for statutory rape. His live-in girlfriend's 15-year-old daughter came forward with allegations that he's been having sex with her for the past five years.

"It's not as uncommon as people might believe it to be," said Child Savers director, Vivian Mann.

Child Savers is an organization that works with children who might be the victim of rape.

"Children can be very vulnerable to these types of relationships and believe they are relationships as opposed to abuse," said Mann.

The alleged victim in this incident came forward and told her school counselor which led to James' arrest. Henrico police are not releasing many details right now but Mann explains how parents can protect their children.

"Really know your child," said Mann. "Some children will have difficulty maintaining a secret. You'll see them start to have sleep difficulties. They become a lot more secretive than you might expect at whatever their age level is."

And for anyone who is currently the victim of statutory rape she had this advice.

"Tell. Tell an adult you feel appropriately connected to. Tell somebody in your life that supports you."
