RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia Democrats are pushing a new bill that would reduce the powers of the Virginia Attorney General.
The Democrats say Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli went "too far" when he demanded documents on global warming research at the University of Virginia.
Instead, the lawmakers who support global warming research say politicians need to stay out of it.
"To me, and frankly, I may not agree with everything I learned in school. In fact, I know that I don't. But to me, professors have to have the freedom to pursue subjects," said Senator Chap Petersen, (D) Fairfax.
The bill would limit the attorney general's ability to issue "civil investigative demands," which are similar to subpoenas.
Cuccinelli, a Republican, said through a spokesperson that he has not reviewed the bill, and therefore could not comment.
