Crash kills one in Spotsylvania County

Press release from Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office

SPOTSYLVANIA, VA – On January 17, 2011, at approximately 11:54PM, the Sheriff's Office received a report of a possible fatal crash of a vehicle on Shepherds Road near Margaret Lane in the western end of Spotsylvania County.

Upon arrival of Deputy S. Noakes, he determined that a 1988 Chevrolet Pickup truck had left the roadway after clearing a slight hill and leaving considerable skid marks and then struck a tree. The driver was found deceased on scene and was identified as William John Barton, D.O.B.: 02-06-1971; W/M; resident of Spotsylvania. The two passengers that were riding in the vehicle were transported to Mary Washington Hospital and were expected to recover from their injuries.

The drivers' brother told deputies that William had been drinking with friends and decided to go out and have some fun on Shepherd's Road during the icy storm. It is believed that both alcohol and excessive speed played a role in the crash.
