VCU starts week in first place

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - VCU picked itself up off the mat after a road loss at Georgia State.  The Rams have won four straight since that game, and now sit in a three way tie for first place in the CAA.

The Rams beat Northeastern Saturday, 73-64, to improve to 5-1 in league play.  Old Dominion beat Hofstra in Hempstead Saturday, and JMU remained hot with a victory over UNC-Wilmington, to force a three-way tie atop the standings.

The Rams have a big week, as they have a chance at retribution Wednesday when Georgia State comes to the Siegel Center. On Saturday they head to ODU, which sits just one game behind the triumvirate at the top.

VCU has stepped up after losing senior guard Brandon Rozzell on Tuesday.  The Highland Springs native broke his hand in practice and will miss 2-3 weeks.  Coach Shaka Smart singled out freshman Rob Brandenburg as a player who had to step up.   He certainly did - averaging 14.5 points in two wins, and on Monday he was named CAA Co-Rookie of the Week, the first time a VCU Ram has won the award in two years.
