Tumblr is a widely known blogging site with a strong Richmond user base. That was the big draw said founder David Karp who hopes to pull more from the local talent pool.
Manchester's swanky Corrugated Box Building on W. 7th Street is now home to Tumblr's new office-- second to its headquarters in the big apple.
Millions share through blogs on Tumblr, which started in 2007. That same year, the social media service hired its first Richmond employee. Until now, staff worked from home.
"We've been following the talent and we wound up with a really spectacular support team here and talented mobile development team," said Karp.
Eddie O'Leary, who runs Colab Multimedia, which makes web sites for small Richmond businesses, just started using Tumblr. It's one way to get his company name out there.
"I can't tell you how many jobs we've gotten off Twitter and Facebook and this is just another outlet to kind of express yourself," said O'Leary.
O'Leary said having Tumblr close to home can only help Richmond's growing technology sector.
"It'll be nice to have high level tech jobs in the city and I think you can get people out of the Washington, D.C. area where they all are, where it costs half as much to live here and it's just as nice," said O'Leary.
Local bloggers turned out in droves for a meet and greet with Karp. Karp said Richmond has served his company well, so he'll continue to search for local talent.
"There's a lot more to do. We need more engineers, and more people to support this growing network," said Karp.
Karp said other social media services will take notice and likely follow suit.
