PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) – A crime alert out of Petersburg where police are looking for the person who forced his way inside a home and shot the person inside.

It happened in the 300 block of North Carolina Avenue around 8:30 Monday night. The victim is a 19-year-old male. Police say he was shot once in the buttocks. Police are looking for the gunman.

Neighbors of the victim are on alert. Susie Allen's was reading a book when she heard the gunfire.

"I heard some shots like four or five.  Pop, pop, pop, like a firecracker," said Allen.

A home invasion was taking place at her neighbor's house. Police say at least one person forced his way inside the home and tried to rob the teenage victim. The gunman shot the teen in the rear-end.

"It's horrible. It's scary," said Allen.

Allen and some of her neighbors call the incident, unfortunate. Cedric Stewart doesn't live in the neighborhood -- but his 92-year-old grandmother does.

"It's very disturbing. I just hope the situation is taken care of in a timely manner because I do fear for her safety and the safety of my neighbors," said Stewart.

There are still many questions surrounding the home invasion including, whether it was random. The victim was treated for his gun wound. The injury is not life threatening.
