Mix of sleet, freezing rain causing traffic issues around Richmond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - We are under a Winter Weather Advisory until midnight for snow and wintry mix.  Our first wave of snow in the early morning has produced mainly light snow (less than an inch).

NBC12 meteorologists Andrew Freiden and Kevin Jeanes discuss today's weather in a new web extra video, linked at right.

The Huguenot Bridge in west Richmond and Henrico County and The Boulevard Bridge were closed in both directions for about an hour this morning due to black ice, according to Richmond police.

During the day most precipitation will be light and spotty, with a mix of sleet and freezing rain around Richmond, with mainly light snow to the North and West of town.

Daytime ice accumulation will be light but is still producing icy roadways.  Sometimes these lighter intensity winter storms can sneak up on people... bringing more accidents than bigger snowstorms where the road hazards are more obvious.  Please take care on the roads.

By evening, most precipitation will change back to snow before ending by midnight.  It should be emphasized that moisture amounts are expected to be quite limited, so even where there is mostly snow well north and west of town, totals should be on the order of a 1-2", with lesser amounts (around an inch or less) in Metro Richmond and points South and East.
