U.S. Rep. Giffords in hospital after being shot

TUCSON, ARIZONA (WWBT) - Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is out of surgery after being shot once in the head.

Doctors say they are optimistic as they can be about Rep. Giffords' recovery.

At 10:11 a.m. MST, a man walked up to a meeting Giffords was holding with constituents outside a grocery story in Tucson, Arizona and open fired.

Eighteen people were injured, not all of them however were shot. The officials say the wounded include some of the Democratic congresswoman's aides.

A trauma surgeon at a Tucson hospital reports that of the ten patients the hospital received, one had died: a young girl. Currently five patients are in critical condition. Five more are in surgery.

The FBI and local law enforcement are investigating the attack. The sheriffs department says the shooting suspect is a 22 year old male. Deputies found a pistol with an extended magazine at the scene.

We will continue to update you with more information throughout the day.
