CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - There have been several recent robberies in the Pocono Green Shopping Center in the 10400 block of Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield. Now the shopping center is boosting security to keep criminals from breaking in again.
Businesses are excited to know more security will be installed after people broke in through back doors then hacked through drywall to access neighboring businesses.
In the last month the Pocono Green Shopping Center was broken into three times. Lock protectors are now in place and the outer handles of back doors were removed.
Lea Wilson works at the Subway restaurant in the shopping center. "Yeah, it's really scary thinking about it," said Wilson. "You know they're coming from all angles."
Wilson's freaked out to know people broke in through backdoors, then cut holes in vacant spaces to access the Hair Cuttery, Liberty Tax Service and the US Coast Guard.
"We actually just had to repair our front door because someone tried to saw the doorjam off," explained Wilson. "That was yesterday."
Elizabeth Tarr explained the hard work it took for people to pry open the door, before hacking away at neighboring walls.
"I just don't think they're very smart people," said Tarr. "I mean, they shouldn't have ever targeted any of the businesses in here because none of us carry any cash."
Friday night she breathed a sigh of relief. Contractors will cover the 20 gashes Monday. Police are patrolling more, and a video surveillance system will be here any day.
"We're trying to lock our doors as soon as it gets dark at night and trying to leave in groups," explained Tarr.
In addition to repairing the drywall, the contractor will plug any open areas behind the shopping center.
