HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - Hanover County has joined the ranks of a number of other law enforcement agencies in launching a facebook page, and you can now get special notices from the county on twitter.
Several Hanover County offices are now using new communication tools, hoping to reach out to more people. You can now follow Hanover County Government on twitter.
The page will mainly deal with closings and special notifications during inclement weather. It launched right before the last major snowstorm. The Sheriff's Office officially launched a facebook page this week. County leaders say reaching out with social media has become a necessity.
"We want to go where they are, and that's where a lot of them are," said Captain Mike Trice.
Trice says a facebook page is a lot different than a community or neighborhood watch meeting, but he says the sheriff's office has realized what an important tool it is.
"If a tool is there for us to use, and it can help prevent crime and solve crime and keep the public informed, I don't think we can ignore it," he said.
The page will contain general information all the time, but the Sheriff's Office hopes to use it to solve crimes quickly.
"If we are looking for a missing child, we want to be very active in that, and we want to empower as many people as we can to help with that investigation, and this is one way we hope to do it," Trice said.
