'Granddad Bandit' suspect to plead in Alabama, Arkansas

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The so-called "Granddad Bandit" suspected of robbing 25 banks in 13 states -- including Virginia -- has signed papers to plead guilty to three heists in Alabama and Arkansas.

Michael Francis Mara is being held in Virginia facing two bank robbery charges. His trial is scheduled for Jan. 13.

The cases are being transferred to the Richmond Federal Courthouse. His trial for robberies in this city is scheduled for January 13. No word if the 53-year-old also plans to enter pleas in the Richmond cases.

The FBI dubbed the balding and graying Mara the "Granddad Bandit" to help law enforcement and the public easily identify the suspect, whose picture was posted on billboards across the country.

Mara was arrested at his Louisiana home in August after a six-hour standoff with police. Mara's attorney declined to comment.
