RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – If you've got business to take care of at the DMV, don't go to the main office on Broad Street tomorrow.
One look inside and you can see why - a burst water pipe flooded the first and second floors early Monday morning.
Nearly 20 hours later, there's still a lot of work left to be done. Crews finished up around 6:30 Monday but they're going to be back bright and early at 8:30 Tuesday morning.
The DMV office is going to be closed until the entire cleanup is finished. Crews spent most of the day cleaning up the mess from the broken water pipe. Last minute customers showed up just before closing time only to be turned away.
"It was closed, obviously," said customer Keishawna Gilliam. "It's kind of inconvenient because I didn't know about it. I've been at work all day."
Gilliam went to the DMV to turn in old license plate tags and, just like everyone else, she was turned away while cleanup crews continued to fix the mess inside.
From the DMV location on Broad Street to the Johnston Willis location in Chesterfield County, the situation didn't get any better. Long wait times turned people away.
We followed Gilliam as she arrived at a second DMV office. No luck for her there either.
We asked Gilliam what they told her when she got there. She said, "The wait would be about 30 minutes. I didn't think I would stay."
Bruce Lane said he had to wait, "about an hour. This is my third time here today though."
The extra wait time might continue Tuesday with the main DMV closed and people heading to offices across the area. Computers and other equipment at that location must be replaced before customers can go there again.
