RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Division of Motor Vehicles customers who showed up to the central customer service center in Richmond were turned away today.   The department closed its doors because a water pipe in the ceiling ruptured -- causing major damage.

When customers showed up to headquarters 2300 West Broad Street they were handed this a copy of locations and directions to neighboring DMV customer service centers. It is unclear when that location will re-open, but it is already closed for Tuesday at that location.

The damage is extensive.

"When I got here it was like it was raining inside," said Leuis Miles, a member of the clean up crew. "All the sheet rock need to be replaced; the wallpaper; counter tops are starting to buckle as they dry."

Around 3 a.m. this morning a water pipe burst on the second floor of the DMV central customer service center.

"We started pulling wallpaper off and sheet rock started falling everywhere," Miles said. "It is one hell of a mess."

Computers were also  damaged but DMV officials say customer information was not affected.

"Luckily our customer  data is housed in Chesterfield County  by VITA on a servers there, so we have no issue with that," said Melanie Stokes, DMV spokesperson.

Some customers call the situation "frustrating." others say, "it is what it is."

"You got to go along with the program and go somewhere else," said customer John Pettaway. "They got another office on Laburnum."

As for when the department will re-open, Stokes said "We don't have a recovery date available yet -- we're sure we won't be open tomorrow."

DMV is apologizing to customers for the inconvenience. It's unclear how much it will cost to get everything back in order at the department.

DMV is reminding customers that many transaction can be done online at  www.dmvnow.com or by using the department's automated telephone service at 1-888-337-4782.

When offices are closed, customers may continue to conduct business through DMV's website, DMV's automated telephone service at 1-888-337-4782 or the mail.

Richmond-area customers who need to complete DMV transactions in person may visit the Chesterfield DMV office at 610 Johnston Willis Drive, the West Henrico DMV office at 9237 Quioccasin Road, the East Henrico DMV office at 5517 South Laburnum Avenue or the North Henrico DMV at 9015 Brook Road in Glen Allen.
