RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – The slight warm up in temperatures has meant some relief for Richmond Public Utilities. The frigid cold has kept crews busy with more than two dozen water main breaks so far this month. Right now--crews are busy fixing a minor break in the 1400 block of National Street in the East End. We checked in today on this week's other trouble spots.

A section of Broad was a traffic nightmare this time last week as crews worked to fix a water main break near 14th Street. The busy travel spot--near a 95 ramp and VCU Medical Center was patched and problem free today.

A similar story on Hull at Midlothian and Brook near Adams on Monday. Folks living along Brook had no water.

"You completely take it for granted. I couldn't wash my hands to put my contacts in. I can't brush my teeth. I can't take a shower. I can't do any laundry or dishes, so it stinks not having any water. You don't think about that kind of thing," said Kayla Selton who had no water earlier this week.

On Franklin Street--evidence remains of a major break that started early Tuesday morning, but it's a welcome site to staff members at St. James's Episcopal Church compared to earlier this week when the break meant a street closure and no water.

"There's a lot of end of the year stuff going on; Christmas preps are taking place, so we are trying to figure out how long we can stay and get stuff done, what we need to get done, and how much we can do from home," said Rev. Randy Hollerith on Tuesday.

The church helps prepare meals for hundreds of people in need at the Freedom House Soup Kitchen daily. They couldn't do that without water and also worried this mess would not be fixed in time for Christmas Eve services.

In addition to the general concern of just not having water, the staff at St. James's was concerned that if the water main break lasted much longer, people attending Christmas Eve services wouldn't be able to park along Franklin Street or get into the parking deck. Fortunately, the fix wrapped up Wednesday and thousands of people are at church right now.

It was also an all clear today on Cary Street, after crews fixed a break Thursday between Allen and Vine. If you do see a major water main break in the city this holiday weekend, you can still report it. Richmond Public Utilities has a 24 hour emergency number. That number is 644-3000.
