HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - There's a new way for people living in Hanover County to get important emergency messages.
In addition to the radio, now all you have to do is pick up the phone, and you can get updates on weather and other Hanover County events.
Hanover County realized that people couldn't always listen to the emergency AM radio station emergency broadcast. That's why they decided to allow people to call and get important info.
NBC12 has covered a number of emergency situations in Hanover County recently. Last winter, the area was hard hit during the major snow storms and just a few months ago, a tornado ripped through Mechanicsville.
"It could be high winds, it could be flooding, it could be anything like that, and we've had it here," said Hanover Battalion Chief William Jones. "Since I've been here, we've had three tornados in seven years, we've had ice storms, we've had snow storms, anything that can happen, it happens."
Hanover leaders have been communicating with people living in the county through radio station AM 1700. The problem is, it doesn't work everywhere.
Some of the more rural areas like Beaverdam were missing out on important emergency messages.
That's no longer the case thanks to a new phone line that simulcasts the information from the radio station. The number is 365-1700.
Now if you call this number when there is not an emergency, you'll simply get info about Hanover County in general and upcoming community events.
