Petersburg officer shoots, kills driver after being dragged

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - An altercation between a driver and a Petersburg police officer Wednesday night resulted in the officer being dragged alongside the car before eventually shooting and killing the driver, according to a release from Petersburg police.

On Wednesday, shortly before 11:30 p.m., a Petersburg police officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 300 block of East Fillmore Street.

Stephen Lee, a 22 year old resident of Petersburg, was the sole occupant of the vehicle described as a 1986 light blue Toyota.

An altercation occurred with the officer and Lee resulting in the officer being dragged along side the vehicle as Lee drove away.  The officer discharged his weapon, fatally wounding Lee.  Petersburg Bureau of Police requested the assistance of the Virginia State Police in the investigation of the incident.

Special Agents with expert training in officer involved shootings responded to the scene and are continuing their investigation. As a result of the incident, the officer is on paid administrative leave.
