Teen hides in closet during home burglary

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) – A Chesterfield teen hides, scared for his life, after crooks break into his house while he's home alone. This happened in the 6600 block of Elvas Lane in the middle of the afternoon Wednesday. He stayed in the closet waiting for the crooks to leave.

The closet the teen was hiding in was in his parent's bedroom. It was the only door the crooks didn't open. He listened as they ransacked the room he was in. Thankfully police were already on their way to catch these guys.

"I was just nervous man," said burglary victim Joshua Seymore. "I was like I don't want to die."

Seymore found himself trapped in the closet Wednesday afternoon after 4 burglars forced their way inside his home. Around 1 p.m. he heard someone break through the back door. He did the only thing he could think of.

"I was right here coming down heard a noise," said Seymore. "That's how I really heard it. I ran upstairs real fast and got in my mom's closet."

As the crooks rummaged through the house, a two inch thick door was the only thing that kept Seymore out of sight and danger. Thankfully he had his cell phone in the closet with him and called his dad.

"I was whispering at the time," said Seymore.

His dad then called 911, unable to physically do anything himself.

"It's a helpless feeling," said the teen's father, Reverend Seymore. "I was angry. Of course that parent instinct you want to protect your child but you're not there."

The reverend was never concerned about the possibility of hearing the situation end tragically on the other end. He believes his son's safety was no accident.

"I pray over my house and my family everyday and the things that could happen, I believe that when God covers you they don't happen," said Reverend Seymore.

The broken door will be replaced. The electronics and jewelry that were stolen is just stuff to the Seymore's. Joshua is just thankful his closet hiding spot went undetected.

"I'm just glad I'm alive here and today and just talking to you right now," he said.

Joshua tells us the burglars were caught. He was able to catch a glimpse of them as they left the house.

He says police found them about an hour later and he identified them in a lineup. All of their stolen items were also recovered.
