CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Six adults and eight children escaped a Chesterfield house fire early Monday morning.

It happened just after 3 a.m. in the 6000 block of Bryanbell Drive. People inside the home were awakened by the smell of smoke and got out safely.

It took firefighters 45 minutes to get the fire under control, and the home is most likely a total loss.

Officials with the Chesterfield County Fire Marshal's Office have determined the fire started on the rear deck, however, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The Red Cross is assisting 14 residents who were displaced.
