Longwood fires coach after second suspension

FARMVILLE, VA (WWBT) - After a troubled three and a half years, Kristen Caruso's tenure is over with the Longwood women's basketball team.   The university has dismissed its women's basketball coach, four days after suspending her to review what it called a "personnel matter."

Athletic director Troy Austin announced the firing Monday. He declined to provide specifics about the dismissal and said "our biggest thing is just moving forward from here."

The Hermitage High School graduate was a college basketball star at women's basketball powerhouse Connecticut.

Austin says men's assistant coach Bill Reinson will move over to coach the women's program on an interim basis. A search for a full-time replacement will come after the season.

The suspension was the second in as many years for Caruso. She was cleared last season after a six-day investigation into "undisclosed personnel issues," the school said.

Caruso's teams had a record on 34-60 in her three-plus seasons at Longwood.
