Chesterfield offers class to minimize holiday debt

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Many people get so carried away with holiday shopping that it takes them a year to dig themselves out of debt. But a class scheduled for Thursday morning could control your spending. Take Deloris Walker's word for it--it works.

Deloris Walker and her husband James are living proof that a little budgeting goes a long way.

"I'm a stickler about money," jokes Deloris Walker.

For decades the pastry chef scribbled down numbers in a notebook. But after going through Chesterfield's holiday money management class things changed.

"It was awesome because I learned so much," said Walker. "James learned so much."

The pair now has savings accounts for emergencies, vacations and the holidays. One drawer is specifically for coupons. Deloris credits Linda Cole for getting her on track.

"This is the basic financial management packet that I use," explained Linda Cole.

In two and half hours you review your income, set goals and plan a holiday budget.

(Why is it important to visualize that?) "It is important because if I have it written down I'm more likely to stick to it," said Cole.

Linda's listened to people who've taken years to pay off holiday debt. That's a no-no.

"That's the number one thing. We want to help people avoid holiday debt."

The class is free and open to everyone. To learn more click here.
