VDOT working to clean clogged drains after storm

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Several of the drains along the interstates were clogged this morning with leaves, and that caused some problems and flooding on the roads for the morning commute.

The water kept piling up and road crews worked for hours, trying to clear the drains along Interstate 195 and 95.

Tons of leaves have been flying around lately, some landing on the interstates.

Drivers like Ariel Barlow know all about that. "Yeah, there are a lot of leaves on the road."

Even VDOT's Dawn Eischen admits, those leaves are quickly covering the drains along the road. "Just driving along 95 right now, I couldn't even see some of the drains. There were so many leaves in front of them."

VDOT says it has maintenance crews that recognize this problem. "The drains are getting clogged and we just can't keep up with the drainage and keeping them clear," says Eischen.

Crews have been out trying to clear the drains, to avoid problems like we had this morning. But not all the drains have been cleaned yet and along the interstates..

Also, another challenge drivers had to deal with along Interstate 95, the water nearly up to the top of the jersey wall affecting hundreds of driving during the morning commute.

In fact, traffic was backed up on both sides of 95 because of it and we found a stream that was quickly overflowing it's banks and flowing into this parking lot.

It was a messy morning commute for sure.

Meanwhile, VDOT tells us the maintenance crews will continue to clear the drains, to avoid problems like this.

But, the work comes with a price. "That's going to requite some lane closures at night because they have to close the lanes to clean out the drains."
