RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Deep frying turkeys has become popular - but it can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.
To avoid starting a fire and injuring yourself, firefighters say, make sure you watch the amount of grease you put in the fryer.
You can test the amount you need by putting the turkey in with water first to measure how much is enough, dump it out, thoroughly dry the pot, then pour in your grease.
Be sure to fry outside on an even surface - away from wooden or other flammable structures.
Finally, keep an eye on the time since fried turkeys cook quickly. It only takes about 3 - 3.5 minutes per pound.
