RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Now that new drivers licenses are sent in the mail, many people don't have a photo ID to use in the meantime.
You'll still have to wait for your new license to arrive in the mail, but now you can track its progress.
Customers at the DMV say it's nice to know how soon they'll have it.
Right now it's a guessing game. The DMV says your license will arrive in seven to ten days, but the ambiguity is tough for people like Dallas Johnson. He says he waited weeks for his license, only to have it never arrive.
"It took me almost a month to realize I didn't receive my ID," he said. "I had to come back in today, which is hard for me to get off work and be able to come in and handle that."
Now people like Dallas will be able to track online when their license is made, when it's sent to the post office and when it should arrive in the mail. The DMV says this will clear up a lot of the confusion.
"'When am I going to get my driver's license' is one of the most common questions we get here," said DMV spokeswoman Melanie Stokes. "This will help answer that question."
Not having a license can be a pain for people like Jonathan Ratcliff. He had his wallet stolen. He says online tracking will give him a better idea when he might start to get his life back together.
"I buy things online all the time and there's no telling when it comes sometimes," he said. "But with the tracking system, it allows me to plan ahead and know that it's coming at a certain time."
Others say it'll simply be nice to know when to keep an eye out for their new license.
"It would help," Johnson said. "If it actually arrives on the day it says it's going to, so it would help to know when it's coming."
You can track your license 24 hours after you apply for a new one. You must set up an online account with the DMV to confirm your identity before you can track your license.
