RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Around 27 workers are missing after an explosion ripped through a coal mine in New Zealand.
Five workers came out of the mine a bit dazed and slightly injured hours after the explosion.
Police say that minutes before the blast, the electricity went out in the mine.
Investigators believe that may have caused ventilation problems - leading to a buildup of gas underground.
Rescue teams and emergency workers are at the mine, but they can't go in until they make sure there is no gas buildup.
Investigators say the miners could be 5,000 feet into the mine.
The mine is not far from the site of one of New Zealand's worst mining disasters that happened back in January 1967. It killed 19 workers.
