HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) - For months, people living in Hopewell have been dealing with tap water they say smells bad and tastes even worse. Now those worries are over thanks to the weather.

According to the Progress-Index the combination of rain and cooler temperatures helped a stinky situation come up smelling like roses.

This all started back in mid-June. People started complaining about a change in odor and smell of the water which was caused by an algae bloom in the Appomattox River.

The algae multiply in warmer weather and when removed during the water treatment process they release a non-toxic substance that causes changes to the water.

The water company Virginia American Water has said all along the water was safe to drink. The company was waiting for the problem to work itself out because the equipment to fix it was just too pricey.

In addition to the weather change the water improvement is also linked to the company working to filter the water.
