VCU outlasts Winthrop in Preseason NIT

by Matt Lincoln

RICHMOND (WWBT) - After a high scoring affair in their first game, VCU played a defensive game in their second showdown of the season.  The Rams showed they could win both ways.

VCU topped Winthrop 67-54 in their first game of the Preseason NIT in Winston-Salem. The Rams will play the home team - Wake Forest - Tuesday.

The Rams shot 50% from the field, and were deadly from beyond the arc - 11 for 24 (46%).

VCU point guard Joey Rodriguez was named CAA Player of the Week for his efforts last week, and put forth another good game on Monday. Rodriguez finished with 15 points and 8 assists.  The only other two Rams in double figures were Bradford Burgess (12) and Brandon Rozzell (10).

The Eagles' Gideon Gamble was the game's high scorer with 20 points off the bench.  None of the Winthrop starters scored in double digits.

VCU improves to 2-0 on the season, and if they beat Wake Forest on Tuesday, they'll move on to the Preseason NIT semifinals in New York City.
