HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – Crews were working late into the night, trying to repair a ruptured gas line and broken water main at the corner of Gaskins and Gayton Roads. This problem started early Thursday morning when most people nearby were getting ready to go to work.
"There was like nothing," said neighbor Junior Facundo. "Barely any water came out."
Fabiola and her son knew something was wrong when they turned on their faucet. Next door, Juanita and her three children didn't realize how serious the situation was until they left their neighborhood. Crews fixing the water main ruptured a gas line forcing police to shut down nearby roads.
"I knew the water thing this morning because I had to take her to school," said neighbor Juanita Beaty. "But I didn't know it was the gas until like 2 something. It was just out here. I took my daughter to the store and it was just water."
Part of Gayton Road is closed as crews work to repair construction on part of the street. They hope to have it open in time for Friday morning rush hour.
Both directions on Gaskins Road will be open for the morning commute. Traffic was rerouted from the area because of concerns about the dangerous gas leak.
"If it had ignited it would have come back to the source there could have been a flash explosion," said Lieutenant Jim Price with the Henrico County Police Department.
The final fix is repairing the road where the water main first broke.
