Piracy prosecution first in U.S. since Civil War

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The trial continues in Norfolk over a piracy attack earlier this year on a U.S. Navy ship.

A federal prosecutor told a jury Wednesday that five Somali men attacked the U.S.S. Nicholas, off the coast of Africa.

The defense attorneys claim the men mistook it for a merchant ship and their clients are innocent fishermen.

The case in Norfolk is the first piracy prosecution to go to trial in the U.S. since the Civil War.

If convicted of the piracy charge, the five men could end up in prison for life.
