Mayor addresses City's need for new jail

Posted by Iva Radman – email

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The status of Richmond's City Jail was a hot topic of discussion at Monday night's City Council meeting.

Members asked Mayor Dwight Jones, "Why does the City need a new jail right now?"

The mayor made it clear that a new lock-up is long over-due.

He said, "It is clear now that delay will only serve to cost taxpayers additional money and leave existing conditions in place that have for too long gone unaddressed."

The City is currently looking at several proposals. The mayor will announce which one the city has picked, in a few months.
