DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) - There's a push to remove a local sheriff from office. Dinwiddie Sheriff Dusty Rhodes was voted into office three years ago. Now, some residents are working to get him out of office.

Those who want him gone claim the sheriff is incompetent and that he's displayed discriminatory behavior. Petitions with hundreds of signatures are being circulated throughout the county -- all calling for the sheriff to be stripped of his title.

A group of concerned citizens is the driving force behind the movement. One is a former Major who served under Rhodes.

"During my tenure with the sheriff's office I've witnessed what I believe to be discriminatory practices that the sheriff was conducting against minorities," said Floyd Hall Jr.

So, the group is taking action.

"The people in the community are tired of this -- the citizens are tired," said Richard Holleman.

NBC12 reached out to the Sheriff's office and was told, "no comment." So, we took our questions to the county which says the sheriff's office does not report to the county administrator or the board of supervisors -- they too, had no comment on the issue.

The sheriff's office operates under a constitutional officers system --- meaning the department only answers to the citizens it serves.

"We voted him in office. We as citizens can take him out of office," said Hall.

To do so, about 650 signatures are needed to file a petition in Circuit Court. Then a judge will determine if the case has any merit.

(Nicole Bell: For someone who thinks this is sour grapes -- how do you answer that?) "People who know who I am, know I stand for equal treatment of all people on and off the job," said Hall.

The group says it plans on filing it's petition in court next week.
