RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A car went airborne and crashed into a pole on a Interstate 195 early Thursday morning. The trooper who worked the scene told NBC12 this crash could have been much worse.

The crash happened just before 2:30am on Interstate 195 near West Laburnum--that's close to the Richmond-Henrico County line. A wrecker was called out to get the car back on its wheels and tow it away.

State Police say a woman was driving north on the road when she lost control coming around a curve. She then hit a guardrail, went airborne and slammed into a pole. The car then kept sliding along the guardrail before stopping.

The driver is in the hospital -- no word on her injuries. The trooper says if it weren't for the pole, he believes the car would have ended up on the road below.

The driver has been charged with reckless driving.
