RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A strong message is being sent to Washington as Virginia becomes a red state once again.

The shift is being seen all across the nation, as Republicans capture the House and narrow the gap in the Senate.

In Virginia's 5th congressional district, Democrat and incumbent Tom Perriello lost his seat to Republican challenger Robert Hurt.

He will be the first 1-term congressman in the 5th district since 1888.

Hurt had about 51 percent of the vote to Perriello's 47 percent.

In Chatham, Virginia Tuesday night, the 400 plus crowd went crazy as Hurt emerged from his law office to make his victory speech.

Perriello gave his concession speech in Charlottesville. He said that he had talked with Hurt and made it clear he still wants to work in partnership with him to help the people in that area.
